Is economics a science?

If it is a science, then why doesn't it work?

The reality: Poverty in the US up. Debt is up. Employment is down. The standard of living is down and heading lower.

But we don't hear that reality. What we hear instead is financial news network "happy talk" and how any problems we have will be solved by the latest government financial engineering program.

Is is possible that economics as a science has been completely co-opted by big business and the venal politicians they control?
