The bookstore story is amazing, but it's real. I think it's a statewide California thing because they do the same thing in San Francisco too.
How serious this?
Remember the story about Florida sending SWAT teams into barbershops to try to find unlicensed barbershops. Workers and patrons including children were held at gunpoint while the "compliance officers" checked paperwork.
This is not just a US problem. I remember seeing a code enforcement officer pumped up on steroids and dressed in a bullet proof vest publicly hassling a food store manager over nothing.
